The guild will accept this chunk of cash and the dead man's rutter and reasign the boy to another master.
The guild gets more cash than it would have, the captain is not unduly harmed, and the boy gains valuable experience (and learns how to get hosed). Seems normal to me.
More then likely he would get the wages in place of the dead Master Pilot's shares and be allowed to keep them because the guild does not receive a share of the what a master pilot earns only his dues and apprentices do not pay dues or receive wages. The guild could either find him a new master to finish out his appenticeship or let him take the exam for master pilot and if he passes he gets the rank.
