HARN Software utilities

This board is for people interested in assisting in the development of software tools for use with Hârn. It would be best for the topics of this forum to remain focussed on the subject matter, and not to wander off topic, as so many other threads do.

HARN Software utilities

#1 Post by Peter Kreft » Sun Jun 18, 2017 2:58 am

Hi,

I am new to the forum, but TRAVELLER players might know my Explanator software.

Right now I have returned to my HARN roots, and I am just working on two projects.

1. A combat simulator. You can enter character data as an external .dat file, that can be modified with any text editor. The software has a NPC and animal database so you can choose opponents. There will be a possibility to export the whole combat as some kind of story. Right now the basic framework is finished but no import or export ability, yet.

2. A Pilot simulator that does all the work from weather generation up to storm damage. Effectively you can enter your SQ and the course (SW, SE, S, etc.) each watch and the software will do the rest. Working, but no ship and crew database, yet.

If there is interest I will upload the WIPs to my mediafire account.

I write in ancient QBasic, but with the modern QB64 compiler, so you can use the software on Windows, MAc and Linux systems.

I'm very interested in this.

Ok, this is an ALPHA version of my HARN Pilot utility.

Basically it governs the whole process of sailing.

You can choose a ship type, enter the crew's skills and go sailing.

The App generates the weather, calculates the movement based on the wind and makes hazard checks and repair checks. The crew will try to repair any damage based on their skills.

You only have to enter the sail quarters and watch the results.

In case of a storm you can see the target number to avoid mishap after the SQ Movement point number.

At the end of each watch a compass gives you the number of hexes you can move from your position depending on the wind direction.

What you see on the screen:

Top row:

Ship type, rigging, sail grade and MPs

Row 2:

Condition of all ships systems.

Row 3: Crew skills

Row 4: Watch, Conditions, weather, wind.

On the left side of the screen all die rolls, targets and results scroll down. It shows die roll/skill result as CS,MS,MF,CF and the table entry from Pilots Almanac

Don't expect any fancy graphics, this is text only...

What is not included, YET.

- Different seasons, right now its only summer.

- Daycount, e.g. the exact date and month. Right now only watches are counted.

- Different locations, right now it's only open sea (e.g. no grounding)

- Encounters.

- Navigational errors.

- Oar movement

If you do not enter any data at the start, e.g. just hit ENTER, you will get the Dak Lorkin, with its crew and its damage, and see how hard it can be to keep a rundown ship afloat...

Right now I would sell my wife for a decent Pilot simulator.

For those of you who get a virus warning.

I attached the .bas file. You will need to install QB64 from QB64 net. Copy the .bas file into the the QB64 directory.

Start QB64 and load Harn Pilot 04.bas

Run it once, that will generate an .exe

That should solve the problems.

Thank you, and the new version just went online. It has its own thread now and the others seasons are already included.

I think you should get an immediate promotion from cottar to reeve at least.

I have a working combat sim and I can upload it, the problem is the handling of the characters.

DATA "PC","Weylund","07E","H"
DATA "Bastardsword",113,103,4,7,4
DATA "Bastardsword",113,103,4,7,4
DATA 17,17,16,65,0,0
DATA 16
DATA "Skull",10,13,7,5
DATA "Face",3,2,1,2
DATA "Neck",4,3,1,3
DATA "Shoulder",8,10,6,7
DATA "Upper Arm",5,4,2,4
DATA "Elbow",4,3,1,3
DATA "Forearm",4,3,1,3
DATA "Hand",3,2,1,2
DATA "Thorax",8,10,6,7
DATA "Abdomen",8,10,6,7
DATA "Groin",8,10,6,7
DATA "Hip",8,10,6,7
DATA "Thigh",4,3,1,3
DATA "Knee",4,3,1,3
DATA "Calf",4,3,1,3
DATA "Foot",4,3,1,3

This is the amount of that is needed for a player character. For an NPC its less, but it must still be prepared for the program to be usable.

DATA "NPC","Brown Bear","05E","4L"
DATA "Claw",70,0,0,5,0
DATA "Bite",48,0,0,0,7
DATA 18,12,12,60,0,0
DATA 1
DATA "All",6,4,3,0

I can prepare a working version, but you will have to enter the data manually. I can import data, that's no problem, but it should be user friendly.
