If something is cool, I'm not afraid to endorse it. I'm just picky is all.

The things I don't like I can count on one hand:

Azadmere
Evael
Gargun
Ivashu (the silly looking or overused ones like the Nolah)

Oh, and high prices and bad marketing, which tend to go together... otherwise, I'd have six fingers.

BTW: When can we expect a software update?

Soon, soon. To make a wild guess, I would say two or three months (hey, for me that's "soon"). I am on the last legs of porting the program over to a new major version of the toolkit library I am using. Once that's done I have to see about adding in some new features to make it worth the download. I have another program I have to maintain as well, and I cannot neglect it too long.

Almost, but not quite. It's been a strange two and half months though. To make a long story short, I have recently started a new job. Things have been on hold for a while. But HarnMaker isn't forgotten!

that toolkit is expensive!
Do you use it just for the graphics?

Qt?

It costs him nothing for this use. As long as the source code for his program is compatible with a GPL "Free Software" licience anyway. The last I looked this code was under a BSD licience, which is even more liberal.

It is arguable how expensive it is compared to other "pro" toolkits anyway. I bet David's time costs a lot more (and we get that for free too! ).

I haven't looked for a while, but it was being used for the backend when I did look. E.g. the XML data files are handled using support from the same toolkit.

"Expensive" is relative. QT is not a toolkit for shareware authors. It's for professional developers whose time is worth far too much to muck about with crappy freeware toolkits. But it's also available for free for those writing Open Source software. HarnMaker is Open Source.

I use Qt for the entire program! The advantage is that it's portable to Unix, Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX, with just a recompile.

A side note/question: did you run into Unicode problems and if you did, was there a solution that required only a recompilation?

I've not run into any problems with it. Qt strings support Latin1, utf8, utf16, and Ascii.

Just wondering how things were coming along with the updated version (If it's still being worked on.)

Thought I'd also throw in a random suggestion as well, might it be possible to give the user the option to use the 'Character Home Generation' tables from Ivinia and Shorkyne in addition to the Harn one?

The option to use Ivinia or Shorkyne tables is already included! But someone needs to come up with these tables. Having hand entered in the Harn birth tables years ago, and then updated for this software, I don't want to go through that tedium again. I'll let someone else have the fun. Just follow the format for the Harn and Barbarian data files.

I want to get a new version out, but there really aren't any new major features, just a bunch of tiny cosmetic updates. I've had a couple of people promise me contributions to add to it, but they haven't shown up.

I'll try to post what I have sometime in the near future. I've got a million things going on though.

Have just found Harnmaker - a great tool - but one small problem I'm having , I can't generate Jarin characters - any character I generate in Orbaaal, regardless of social class, deity or occupation, comes up as Viking ...

I'm not generating either Ivinians or Jarin. The name of the culture is "Viking (Orbaal)", perhaps that's where you are getting confused? In HM3, the culture for Orbaal is "Viking", and I named it "Viking (Orbaal)" to avoid confusion with just plain "Viking".

Been a while since I last posted on this forum. Thought I'd let everyone know that I've relocated the files I was working on to allow Shorkyne characters to be generated.

Hopefully I can get them working before the end of the year.

BTW. Any plans for a V 0.6.0?
