The beta is over, and the final release of Hârnmaker 0.4.0 is here! No
new features, but several bug fixes have been addressed. Thanks for
being patient these several months.

HârnMaker is a full featured character generator for HM3 (sorry, no HMG support at this time). I have stuck to the official HM3 rules as closely as possible. Please read the included documentation for design notes and other information.

Here's a screenshot. Installation packages are available for Windows and Macintosh, and full source code is provided for Unix and Linux users (as well as the intrepid and curious). This is Free Software! Enjoy!

p.s. I'll be turning my attention to some tasks that got pushed aside
while I was working on Hârnmaker. Because of this I don't plan to be
adding any new features for a couple of months. But don't let that stop
you from reporting any bugs I may have missed.

Edit: corrected URL

Cool software! One question though, I cannot find Shek Pvar under the occupations list drop-down, but under esoterica it shows convocations - what am I missing?

Shek-Pvar is a guilded occupation. So your social class needs to be "Guilded" before Shek-Pvar shows up in the occupation list. There is a FAQ entry that is related to this, ook at the included documentation (under Help->Contents).

That's a great tool. Thank you for sharing. I will definately use it for creating NPC and PC. It saves a lot of time calculating skillbases.
Cheers,
R.

There appears to be a problem with the Mac version. It works for some people, but for others it just flashes briefly and exits. It doesn't seem to be OSX version related.

I am not a Mac developer, and I don't even own a Mac. So getting this problem fixed is a problem in itself. I don't know what to do. Maybe I was just being naive in thinking I could support the Mac while not owning one.

I'm having problems downloading it. Is there another source available?

Actually no, not that I know of. The lythia.com listing is just a link back to me. If someone else wants to mirror it, please be my guest.

The Mac OSX version is working once again! =D>

I broke down and bought a Mac iBook today. I'll be using it for more than just development, of course. I was thinking about doing this for a while, and this latest problem just spurred me into action. The funny thing is, as soon as I got back from the store, I checked my email, and the very first one was from a kind soul who fixed the program and sent me a copy! If he had been a couple of hours earlier, I might still be putting off getting a Mac.

OK, I got it now. For some reasons the Internet powers-that-be were not letting me download the whole file. That's settled now.

On the Hârnmaker: that's a nifty little tool. So far, I still like the one from Synthetic Realites better, but since that one is not available anymore and (IMO) will never be updated, the Hârnmaker will overtake it very soon.

Some comments - in a playtest frame of mind:

- Brothers and Sisters could be added to the list of possible clanheads.
- A name generator is a nice thing to have, even though it must be a major pain to program. While EBoN is always available, it's nice to have an alternative.
- Additional races: Gargun, Ivashus, Ilme.

In any case, take my comments with a pinch of salt. The Hârnmaker stands very well on its own and the suggestions are made in the event you want to expand the program.

Kudos for a solid tool.

Cheers,

Roland

Absolutely. If the Harnmaker is a work in progress it will make an already great piece of work even better.

Thanks!

That's a perfectly sensible idea, but for some strange reason the rules don't have it listed. I've added it to the next version as something you can select but won't be rolled.

I could certianly add one. There are several ways to do one, from looking up in a huge list of names, to generating them from phonological constraints.

A Gargun set is planned.

I just wanted to add my thanks for this cool and useful piece of Harnic software. I just used it to put together the stats, skills etc. for five NPCs that will be in the my next FFF release, in far less time than the first seven that I did by hand. The printed output gives me a good basis to work from, and makes it far easier to make adjustments as I work the text details .
Thank you very much for your hard work.
John

I just tested the HârnMaker, and I must say that I am pleased how it works. But there are some points that I miss or would suggest to add:

- Combat Profile: Weapons and Armours to be selected (or better even: bought from your starting money).

- Character Point System: Maybe it could be included?

- Editable: Especially concerning an optional CP system, it could be very helpfull if the user can manipulate the program to his personal needs. Maybe some users would like to add their own skills, weapons, armours or even occupations to the programm.

- Spells & Invocations: As already mentioned in the program, this addition would be really helpful.

- Combat Profile (2): Move and Endurance should be determined, too. Maybe making it optional to roll for MOVE instead of deriving it from AGL, and to make it optional to calculate END from Constitution.

That being said, let me add that I thank you very much for the work you have loaded upon your shoulders to provide the comunity with such an useful program!

Cheers

Timo

I too am delighted to find this tool available, and I'm very pleased with the interface so far, although I've only played with it for a few minutes since downloading it.

One thing I would sort of like to see, if there are future versions, is the optional bits about medical traits, life expectancy and so forth. That said, the interface does allow me to generate them separately and update the main file quite easily, so it's not a major inconvenience in any event.

They are in the TODO list. One of these days, one of these days.

The program loads its data from plain text XML files. Although I haven't included any database "editor" for these files, you can still edit them in a text editor. There is a file for skills and another for occupations. Read the included handbook (Help->Contents), especially the "Design Notes" section. In Windows these files will be in the install directory. In the Mac they will be inside the application bundle under "Contents/Resources". In Unix they will be installed under /usr/share/harnmaker.

You're welcome. The best payment I get is knowing that people are enjoying the program.

I finally tried this out and it's great! The printout is concise and easy to read. Some missing things have already been pointed out: Medical and Psyche traits, Life Expectancy, END, MOVE, Combat and Armor Profiles... A random Harnic name generator would be nice so your HarnMaker is a one-stop shop and we don't have to use EBoN, too.

The other things I'd like to see are a list of all Religious Invocations and Shek-Pvar spells. I know I can write those down myself in Notes, but it would be way easier to select them from a drop down menu with slots to add in custom ones as needed. Say if you pick cleric as your profession, you get all the basic invocations auto-added, then there would be a drop down menu to select a specific religion (Agrik, Larani, etc.), and then another drop down menu for that god's invocations. The same kinda thing with Shek-Pvar convocations.

Again, this is an absolutely fantastic, easy to use tool. Making NPCs by hand will soon be a thing of the past thanks to you! Whatever our differences in the past, man, I gotta hand it to you on this one. I gotta give credit where credit is due! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm fiddling around with the next version, but don't expect it to be soon. I don't know what new features will be added yet.

Equipment has a prominent position in the todo list. But I'm not sure in what form it will take. Do I include a dropdown list of all available equipment, or let the user type them in manually? Of course, I would have to have a built-in armor calculator...

I prefer a drop down list with the option to manually type in items not listed. I suppose equipment should be divided into type (drugs, weapons, armor, food, property, gems/jewelry, etc.).

PS: I love the fact that your skill list realphabetizes itself after you add or subtract skills from it. Such a simple thing, but it makes a HUGE difference. Makes sure the equipment list does this too!

It's slightly over two weeks later, and I'm still stunned that AgrikanFury likes my program, because AgrikanFury normally doesn't like anything! I don't know whether to feel complimented, or to call the cops to report a case of body snatching...
