Out at work, watching this movie in the hotel and the thought occured to me that this sword would make an interesting item. what spells would be needed to make the blade appear then disappear on command?

That was soooo.... unhelpful. Funny, but unhelpful.

I was thinking of some ancient Elvish blade forged eons ago... as I don't have my stuff with me and since I rarely use magic or artifacts in my games (which is weird) I can't recall any fancey Jmorvie spells that would do that. I do recall a metal staff the extended on command. I think it was from the Nolomar campaign. :?

Yep. The trick is a spell the PC Jmorvi researched. It stretches one dimension and doesn't affect total mass. His staff is a 6' steel tube when he uses it, and a 6" bar of steel with a thin hole down the middle when he hasn't cast the spell on it.

And nobody thinks that a short bar of steel is a weapon, so it's gotten past every guard to date.

What is the stats for that weapon if you don't mind me asking? How thin does the metal get at full extension?

I treat it as a normal quarterstaff. The steel is fairly thin-walled at full extension; it's still 1-3/8" diameter and the same mass as a bar 6" long. I expect that it rings like a tubular bell when it hits -- ringing someone's chimes twice, as it were.

And as for the guards -- sure, you could get hurt by a 6" piece of steel. Wrap your fist around it and you've got cheap brass knuckles, same as using a roll of quarters these days. So? It's nowhere as dangerous as the belt knife practically everyone carries, which is universally exempted from the weapons restrictions. Even the unfree are allowed to carry tools. For that matter, the unfree can carry a staff without restriction.

I thought it was called a lightsaber....

On a more serious note, maybe some sort of dimensional magic that would effectively store the blade in another plane (and have a small chance of popping some weird extradimensional being being out whenever it's used)...

I just had the thought of mei pei (kill bill 2) apprearing with the blade... standing on it and the informing the owner of what a view he is going to have of mei pei's foot....
Alright, alright... I though it was funny.
