A collection of Uthriem Roliri NPCs is now available for download. This collection of NPCs is meant to complement the Uthriem Roliri article from CGI.

The goal of this NPC collection is to give examples of Uthriem Roliri members of different ranks, genders, ages, social status, occupations, religious backgrounds, and locations. The NPCs follow the format of the “Friends, Foes, and Followers” collections and feature illustrations, descriptions, and statistics. The NPCs include:
    • a teenage woodward (Apprentice)
    • a Fyvrian Shek Pvar (Apprentice)
    • a scout for Fur Road caravans and pilgrim groups (Ranger)
    • a cartographer and Salt Route scout (Ranger)
    • a huntsman along the Silver Way (Ranger)
    • a royal forester (Ranger)
    • a bounty hunter who specializes in the undead (Ranger)
    • a shepherd with a secret identity (Ranger)
    • a cleric who is a healer and herbalist (Guardian)
    • a cleric who ministers to an outlaw community (Guardian)
    • a noble bailiff (Warden)
    • a hermit with a storied past (Warden)
This is my first fanon submission. I hope people find it useful.

This is a very valuable reference for any GM. The NPCs in this set really add a lot of depth to the old Ranger character type, and give excellent examples of what PC Uthriem Roliri can strive for (or from). There are plenty of ideas for adventure hooks, and many are quite portable into any campaign with access to wilderness.
I recommend this download to GMs who want to get their PCs out for a walk in the woods.
I think it makes an especially dynamite combination with Uthriem Roliri and Nasty, Brutish, and Short and/or Silver Way. You could keep a party occupied in the wilderness for quite some time, which in my opinion, makes this a real winner of a download.

What a fortunate coincidence! Yesterday, my players were discussing hiring some sort of wilderness guide for their journeys and the thought crossed my mind that I should introduce an Uthriem Roliri as an NPC. I've got some reading to do before our next session, but I feel certain I'll be able to either use one of these characters directly or get inspiration for one of my own, so this is very valuable.

Thanks!

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to say thanks for this download--it looks really good. I also downloaded the Uthriem Roliri article from rpgnow.com to go with it.

Thanks, Scott, I am glad you liked them both. I have some more Uthriem Roliri-related articles planned, just not sure when I'll get to them.

Great! I'll (patiently) look forward to seeing them. If I can rope anybody else into this rpg thing with me, these pieces give me lots of idea I can use. Plus I've always had an unhealthy preoccupation with ranger characters. :)

My opinions:
  • Per Evael, Morsindar are simply Sindarin who have "gone bad", malcontents or criminals. "Dark elves" simply refers to their negative "moody" worldview, not any physical differentiation with other Sindarin.
  • The Uthriem Roliri as an organization know a lot about the Sindarin. They would know that they refer to some of their number as Morsindar and would understand why. But like anyone else, they wouldn't be able to tell a "dark" Sindarin from a "normal" one. Since the UR communicate regularly with the Sindarin crown, it is reasonable to think that they are aware of any Sindarin who have been banished from Evael. I think the Sindarin would let their UR friends know to watch out for these "bad rats."
  • Evael also says the Morsindar are much less inclined to tolerate human destruction of the forest. The way the UR are written, it is quite possible that some of the Brotherhood would be sympathetic to this view. Many among the Brotherhood have a similarly dark, fatalistic outlook on life, so they might see the Morsindar as kindred spirits.
  • The UR has a long history with the Sindarin and the Sindarin feature in many of the tales told to new apprentices. The UR respect the Sindarin and some even adopt aspects of the Sindarin lifestyle. I think it is easy to say that their would be many Brothers with some degree of hero worship for the Sindarin and who would be a bit star-struck if they encountered one, especially the first time.
  • Likewise, the Morsindar know about the UR, and would know that there are some among them who are a bit more fanatical that the rest. I can see the Morsindar trying to find these zealots and making allies of them. The Morsindar may hate humans but I think that is all the more reason that they would want to find some who they could influence or control and use them as agents or patsies.
  • In an unfinished fanon article, I have an outpost of UR that has been "befriended" by a couple of Morsindar (who they believe are simply normal Sindarin). The Guardian of the outpost is highly susceptible to the influence of the Morsindar and has consequently been guiding his Rangers to higher levels of confrontation with, and sabotage of, the nearby miners. The Morsindar are being fairly subtle but they are the masterminds behind the operation, while letting the UR do their dirty work. They know that if things go wrong, it will be the UR who suffer the consequences, not them.

Thank you very much Bbailey, lots of excellent info there.

Considering the connection with the Crown; (which I assume many morsindar would know) contact with the UR is potentially perilous therefore...more so than with regular humans. Interesting.
