I'm pleased to announce a new bit of fanon I've just sent to Peter for uploading:

Bognor's Folly is set on the periphery of the kingdom of Orbaal in northern Hârn. Here, in the Anoth Delta, the rule of the Ivinian overlords is weak. Pirates, rebels, and barbarians prowl the marshes, as do more mysterious things. In this bleak wilderness is hidden an esoteric jewel: the lost sanctum of the great mage Bognor.

Bognor's skill was legendary. His knowledge of living things, especially the green and growing, was without compare. But so too was his pride. He delved too deeply into secrets best left alone, it is said, well past the limits of his understanding.

Nearly a quarter century has passed since Bognor's demise. Many have tried to find his marvelous home, to uncover his secrets, or plunder his treasures. None have returned. Will the player characters be able to succeed where others have failed? Can they find the wizard's famous abode and unlock its mysteries? Or will they, too, become victims of Bognor's folly?

56 pages of content, including:
• Bognor's Folly: An adventure synopsis with suggestions for getting your characters involved and for further expansion by the gamemaster.
• Bognor's Island: A description of Bognor's island sanctum, its unique inhabitants, and its secrets.
• Anoth Delta: A wilderness article describing the region surrounding Bognor's hidden sanctum.
• Bognor's Arcana: A collection of useful items associated with Bognor, including expansions of CGI's Herblore, Potions, and Tomes & Scrolls articles. Also included is a four page expansion of the Fyvria section of HârnMaster Magic, with details of some of Bognor's original spells.
• Maps and Plans: Player and GM maps of the island, plus plans of its two main locales. Also includes an atlas map and a player handout map of the Anoth Delta.

While part of the package, the Anoth Delta article is a separate download (for those who want to use it independently of the adventure stuff):

The Anoth Delta is a largely uncharted wilderness in northeastern Hârn, where the Anoth River empties into the Sea of Ivae. The terrain is primarily marshland, broken by areas of open water and more than a score of islands. The area is vast, covering about 750
square leagues.

Although the Anoth Delta is claimed by the Kingdom of Orbaal, it is also home to the Anoa tribal nation and is within the ranges of the nomadic Diaffa and Wurokin gargun. In addition to the Jarin and Ivinian inhabitants of the Orbaalese settlements, the delta is home to outlaws and pirates who find refuge in its marshy waterways.

The area is known for its abundance of wildlife, insects, and plants, some species of which are found only in the delta. The Anoth Delta is a dangerous place, with many natural hazards that can hamper or harm those unfamiliar with this type of environment.

This article describes the history, geography, flora and fauna, and natural hazards of the Anoth Delta. A map of the entire delta is included, as are descriptions of the area's three regions and their inhabitants.

These are now available for your downloading pleasure:

I would also like to say that these article set the bar yet higher for fanon publication. They are fantastic!

Anybody on a Mac and has problems seeing most illustrations of the Bognor's Folly-PDF in Preview? The Anoth Delta-PDF works fine.

I just checked-- and yes, I have the same issue.

However, I can view them all just fine with Adobe Reader.

Yep, they work in my Acrobat Pro, but I prefer the quickness of Preview.

I can't comment on Mac - but though I can read Anoth fine, I can't view the illos in Bognor's Folly using Acrobat. Not too suprising it is a couple of versions out of date - so I updated to the latest version of Acrobat Reader. I works fine in v9. Does preview support the latest PDF format?

Hm. I get the same problem with the downloaded version of Bognor's Folly, but not on the version I originally submitted, so I suspect that it has something to do with the small technical adjustment Peter needed to make to that article before posting (and that also explains why Anoth Delta works fine). I can send Peter a fresh version which should fix that, although, as jchokey pointed out, it works fine with Adobe Reader.

Thanks!

We originally submitted two files to Peter. One was Anoth Delta and the other was the full Bognor's Folly package, which also included the Anoth Delta pages. Both files were compatible with Acrobat 7. When Peter removed the Anoth Delta pages from the full package, my guess is that he saved the file in a way that was not compatible with older PDF renderers, like the Mac OS preview and older versions of Acrobat.

I am preparing a new Bognor's Folly file for Peter that is compatible to the same level that Anoth Delta is. This should clear up everyone's problems.

It's strange... Bognor's Folly was only converted to Acrobat 7. Not even the newest version. So it should work without problems AFAIK.

Could be some transparency or shadow stuff.

Well, I ask my colleague in the office tomorrow, he's more knowledgeable with difficult PDF problems... he's the one our own graphics department constantly are nagging when they have problems with creating PDFs from QuarkXPress...

Other than that, both publications look great. :)

FWIW: I should mention that the version of Preview that I have (that won't show all the images) is 3.0.9, and I'm still running under System 10.4.11 (Tiger).

So, I'm definitely running an old version of Preview (current version is 5.0.1) on an old system (current Mac system is 10.6.2-- i.e. "Snow Leopard"). I'm not sure whether hrafn's also running an older version.... but if so, I suspect that this could be a factor?

UPDATE: After further investigation, it appears the problem was not caused by Peter removing the Anoth Delta pages.

The Bognor's Folly file is about 24 MB and is compatible with Acrobat 7. That version looks fine in Preview. However, to reduce the download time and bandwidth, I used Acrobat's compression feature and got the file down to about 15 MB. While this version works in Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader version 7+, it appears it does not work in the MacOS Preview, but only for some people and in some configurations.

Because everyone is capable of viewing this in Acrobat or Reader (v 7+), I do not necessarily think it is a good idea to burden Peter with the extra storage space and download bandwidth that the uncompressed file would result in.

That seems reasonable to me. Maybe Peter might find it worthwhile to add quick note on the download page to clue folks in to the technical issue with some versions of Preview.

P.S. I'm really eager to read this, but it's a busy, busy Sunday... hopefully soon.

The boys have sent me a new version of the file, uncompressed and this should be readable by everyone. It's 24Mb in size, but these days, that's not excessive.

Please reply here if you have any issues with this new version.

Thanks this is great.
Just a quick question that may be covered in the text, but what is the tidal range in the Delta?

That's not covered in the text of the article, but it is available from the Pilot's Almanac.

For those who don't have access to that:

The average tidal range is 15 feet, but it varies between 12 and 18 feet, with the highest range occurring at the Yaelah and Yaelmor. The low range occurs roughly half way between (around the 8th and 24th).

As for when the tides occur:

Arone: High tide at 3am and 3pm; Low tide at 9am and 9pm
Lorkin: About 30 minutes later.

Thanks, so that tidal range would change the lay of the land considerably, also adding to navigation confusion.

Indeed. Lots of tidewater islands and submerged wrecks make for interesting navigation. It also makes it possible for some animals to walk to other islands at low tide.

FYI: I don't think it's explicitly stated, but the shoreline on the Bognor's Island local map assumes high tide.

Thanks for the uncompressed version. Works fine in Preview.

I just discussed this "small problem" with a colleague and Preview on MacOS X indeed doesn't use all non-standard features of the latest Adobe PDF versions. It seems to work correctly only with PDF version 1.4 or less (= Acrobat 5). Layered PDFs also don't show the layers in Preview.
