Dead Weight adventure is now posted on DriveThru.

This module contains an excellent adventure by Dan Bell along with the optional quickstart rules.

I don't have it yet, but I hope it contains a better premise for the players to get involved than the last one. Smacks as un-Harnic to have a weak lead in.
I shall get it and hope for the best.

First, always fun when it is available for purchase as download before subscribers get it :? Ah, well I will get it soon enough.
Second, the adventure is I believe a little bit un-Hârnic, but a second thought, so Rethem

This was available printed for Free RPG Day a few weeks ago. I just got a copy, and I'm trying to make sure it's complete (looseleaf pages and wasn't sealed when I got it).

I have:

Outer folder
Copyright sheet
Dead Weight 1-10
Sea Hag 1-6
A Company Of Adventurers 1-10
Harnmaster Quickstart 1-19 + ad page

Is that right?

Allan, please let me know suggestions for a strong lead-ins/premises so I can refine my writing in the future. :D
Thanks, Dan

OK nothing personal.
With the daisies adventure, I was all set to play it with my son and daughter, as they are new to gaming, got them primed, sat down to read it, and as I mentioned in a previous thread about that adventure, the lead in to get the PC's to the adventure location was non-existant. But like a short story, its one of the main items to get the story started.
Other's said 'just fudge it' etc, but I was looking for a stonger lead in, personally.
Spilt milk and all that, moving on now.

I thought Dead Weight was going to be in an up coming HarnQuest? What's going on here?

Hi,

what do you think of it? I like the idea behind the adventure but not the way it unfolds. The plot is somehow thin

There could be done much more with the kidnapping, the disea, the (un)dead Morgathian, the sea voyage. As presented this is a quite straight forward adventure with a rather unmotivated fighting scene at the end. Moreover not all of the pre-generated character fit into the story, IMO. For example I can't believe a quite experienced member of an Agrikan fighting order would be kidnapped and if so, he would never work on the ship.
This is not a release I will use. But maybe I canibalize it (good art, characters, some basic ideas).
Regards,
R.

Yeah, that jarred with me too. All but Cenek seemed too experienced in the ways of Golotha to be caught up.
BTW "Hi my name's Cenek of Gramon, I'm looking for Cenek of Gramon..." That doesn't seem to work too well either. :D

Other than that and the plot seeming to peter out, I liked the material.

Keep in mind that the purpose of Dead Weight (like Field of Daisies before it) was to be used for FreeRPG Day and introduce people to Harn who probably had never played it and may never have heard of it. It must be something quick and simple that can be played in a few hours by complete newbies, and as a result is bound to be a bit thin to Harniacs. Not responding to any specific point, just trying to provide context. 8)

I don't know what I will do with Dead Weight, but I took some of the material from FoD and used it for another village I needed. Nothing wrong with a little resewing.

Surely the purpose of the PCs/NPCs is to give a flavour of what these are like on Harn to people who don't know what Harn is like. The emphasis on providing coverage rather than believe motives for inclusion?

That's right - most non-Harnic GMs are likely to review the provided NPCs and then see if their own party is lacking significant skills. The expectation is that GMs will prefer to use existing characters if at all possible, and if not then these at least cover all the skills necessary for success while simultaneously showing off what HM can do with a strong character concept.

When I ran this in Madison, WI for Free RPG Day, the (hopefully ex-) D&D players were as intrigued by the rich character descriptions as much as they were wowed by the combat. I'd say DW served it's purpose. And the adventure is sound; I'm either going to run one (or both) of my gaming groups through an adaptation of it or keep it as a diversion, as written, for when there are several absences at the table.
