Hi all,

After a very long delay, I am pleased to announce the release of FFF12. This release would not have been possible without the assistance of Richard Luschek, my faithful artist, and Brent Bailey, who has graciously agreed to help edit this latest FFF.

I would also like to thank the art sponsors for this article, many of whom paid for art over a year ago. Many thanks and apologies for the long wait.

This is the twelfth in the series of two page NPC descriptions designed for use with Hârn.

Friends, Foes, and Followers is a GM resource that uses a common format for presenting 2 pages of information about a character. The characters can be used in any way the GM sees fit; as NPC opponents, helpers or even emergence PCs for that unexpected player, making these resources no GM should be without. With artwork by Richard Luschek, this instalment contains:

a Khuzdul clansman
a charcoaler
a glassworker
a lexigrapher
a miner
a perfumer
a tentmaker
a woodcrafter
a cartographer
a slave
a Patrician knight
a Jmorvi mage

With FFF 12, some minor changes have been made to the “final” layout introduced in FFF11. A revised and updated index has been included which explains the new numbering system for FFFs and which now includes the name of every FFF character released to date by HWG including the FFF release number they can be found in. The header on the text/stat side has been coloured to match the section shown in the index. The rating system proved too cumbersome and has been eliminated.

On the request of a fan and great supporter of the FFF series, I have also included a twelve page pdf with just the character illustrations so you can use them wherever you like.

It is my intent to re-release FFF 1-11 in this “final” format as soon as possible.

As always, FFF12 is available on Lythia.com. Thanks also to Peter Leitch for his kind assistance with hosting:

I hope not another artistic rendering of me.... :D This happens to come at a good time since I'm 'overhauling' my FFF binder, putting them in FFF sequence rather than hodge podge method. As usual Kerry, you doing great work.

As always, this is excellent stuff! :D

Thank you so much for your efforts Kerry! The entire FFF series continues to be my most-used Harn resource.

Cheers,
Brian

Excellent, as always.

Just a minor quibble, all the characters seem to be of veteran status. Have you though about just a FFF publication of starting characters for a drop in Player? That guy who you do not want upsetting the entire campaign with by?
Someone manageable?

Hi,

They all fairly experienced characters.

The Khuzdul clansman, Patrician Knight and Jmorvi Mage are probably not suitable as starting characters. Though the Jmorvi is only a Satia-Mavari and about as low skilled a mage as you will find outside a chantry, he is also an expert silversmith and rich, which probably makes him unsuitable for a starting character.

The charcoaler, glassworker, woodworker, cartographer and slave, are all average type characters.

The miner and perfumer are experienced characters within very narrow skill ranges.

The tentmaker is too old to be suitable as a PC. The lexigrapher is blind, which makers her of limited use as a PC.

So you are right, only five of the twelve characters immediately are really suitable as PCs.

It is interesting. The series started out as "friends, foes and followers" but one of the most frequent uses GMs tell me they use them for is as pre-generated characters for drop-in players and convention use.

The next FFF is planned as an all gargun issue.

Once I have updated the other FFFs, I will be doing some new FFFs. I would be open to any and all suggestions of the type of character and skill levels that GMs would find useful as "starting level PCs".

Thanks

- Kerry

errrgh? All Gargun issue?

Well that could be quite useful, don't worry about starting characters in that lot as I'm relatively sure that few players desire a walking target.
Though it would solve the problem of the one shot drop in character...

I use them mostly as NPCs, but a few of them have ended up serving as the inspiration for PCs in my campaign.

I find it interesting that money and experience are seen as inappropriate for starting characters. AD&D (and most computer games) gave us the idea that you have to start out weak, stupid, and poor and rise from that point. But really, there's nothing that makes this necessary. I'd have no problem at all with the Khuzdul as a new character, nor with a character that is filthy rich. As long as the character has a reason to be in the story, I'm good with them. And really, there's no reason that everyone can't start off as a veteran, especially in campaigns that expect to be light on combat.

Indeed thats how I see it too and the characters from FFF often work better at this level than when you start with 16 year old PCs. Characters that have live for a while bring with them their experiences and this adds color to the game.

Or perhaps it has something to do with me getting older ? :-k

I too would have no trouble with a more experienced PC, though most of my players have always wanted to develop their own characters (there have been one or two exceptions).

I find the FFF series invaluable as intended. They have been all three Fs to my players, and some have gone from one F to another F. So far, no one has managed all three Fs, for that might be an F too far ...

<sigh> I'm sure that has something to do with it. I've noticed a creep in the age of my characters. I don't play the 20-year-old any more, and am finding the grizzled veteran far more interesting, if less energetic, than the young pups still trying to make a name for themselves.

Kerry,
Thank you for this installment of FFF. It was a great read and I hope to use these NPCs one day. (Any realistic non-humans like the khuzdul are really helpful.)

Thank you also to Brent for the layout Richard for the kick-ass art and the art sponsors for helping with this project.

Thank you all.
-Dan
