Just got a note from Steve Turner of Britannia Games. They've just started releasing some C&S products in PDF form here.

There are a couple of free maps for Rebirth's Marakush setting, and a couple of Marakush sourcebooks, and they Treachery scenario, which includes HarnMaster stats (HM2, IIRC) and advice on adapting the scenario to a Harn campaign.

Let's hope these are a success and more of the C&S material becomes available - and not just the rebirth rules; there's quite a back catalogue of rarities in their list. Bireme & Galley, anyone?

And just before Christmas, a new PDF/print-on-demand rules set went up.

Chivalry & Sorcery Essence is now available in print or PDF.

Colin Speirs (Ar-Pharazon of this forum) has greatly expanded the original Essence rules, which some may remember were a 4-page freebie.

You now get a complete, simple, fast-play version of the rules, a scenario in Britannia's Marakush setting, and a map by yours truly.

You can download the map as a single-page freebie as well.

You can find them at DrivethruRPG.

How does C&S compare to Harnmaster in terms of complexity?

Is C&S gritty, low magic, low fantasy?

The full C&S rules and HarnMaster are probably around the same level of complexity, though C&S's combat is somewhat simpler (and more abstract).

However, these new rules are the stripped-down Essence version: very simple and fast both in play and for character generation.

C&S's default level is magic-rare low fantasy, but that's highly variable. I've seen it used for everything from strict historical games to fairytale high fantasy.

It's probably about as gritty as HMCore/3, not as gritty as HM Gold.

Thanks Andy

Is it tied to a setting, or something more akin to Harnmaster?

It's not tied to a setting, although the default rules assume that you're in a feudal society with a monotheistic religion.

C&S Essence is a nice little system.
