I only put that in to shock our genteel American cousins (How on earth a stereotype of Vulgarity is applied to Americans I do not know...they are the least vulgar/ most prudish people I have ever met. I blame Dickens and Oscar Wilde.) Anyhooooo's.

Whilst on yet another wonderful re-enactment day at Kenilworth castle with the Kids (Yadda Yadda it is all I seem to do with them I know); the Gong Farmer (also a lecturer on Bio-science at Liecester University 8O ) delighted my children by showing them a medieval toilet (A board with a hole in it) and the 'toilet paper' that was used (Moss and Linen mostly).

This got me to thinking...wouldn't people (i.e. P.c's) be a bit more obsessed with carrying their own stocks in case they are caught short? I mean the possibility of finding a place with available stocks of moss and linen would be miniscule...(kind of like taking a vacation in Europe. Just thought I would add that for balance). So from now on all my Pc's will be armed with twenty strips of linen. Come in handy for wound dressings too. (Before use in the Jakes obviously 8O )

Another thing that got me thinking was the extensive use of 'pulling' at legs/arms the weapons re-enactors seemed obsessed with with pikes/axes etc...but maybe I shall open another thread on that one....

It was a good lesson for the children. Showing them how much things have changed in several hundred years, and that sanitation is one of the things that has kept most of the western world living longer.

An interesting site on this point (in french) :

http://www.lefaiseurderipailles.fr/page ... ettes.html

and

http://www.lefaiseurderipailles.fr/page ... lette.html

Boards with a hole are still used in some places in the country.
Moss and linen can be replaced by dead leaves, straw or even water with the help of the LEFT hand, like is practiced in half of today's world

That said, toilet paper presents some drawbacks...The below site shows in real time the number of trees cut to satisfy world consumption. I.e. 3.2 tree/second :

This reminds me of an English medieval joke I was once told......"What is the cleanest leaf in the forest?" Answer: "A holly leaf, as it is the only one you wouldn't wipe your arse on!" It's great that this is still funny, even in the 21st C!

Thanks JNJ! Some great illo's on that site. If only my French was better than that of an 8 yr old. And that is of an english 8 yr old. Obviously 8 yr old French kids speak marvellous French. And English no doubt. Dommage! :D

yeah, it probably was. But when I do elves I always do them with as little technology as possible (toilet paper being technology) and replace everything I can, no matter how mundane, with magic. Not really that epic, but for a magical race the magical wipe and a few purify/destroy spells and a sewer is no longer needed. Helps them reside in one place for centuries without having a big impact on their preferred natural surroundings.

Honestly, elves have no need to eliminate waste. Being perfect, their bodies use 100% of what they ingest.

And a joke that wouldn't work in North America, since as bad as holly would be, poison ivy would be worse.
:-P

I'm sure he would have gone on to create many more useful spells if it he hadn't been squeezed to death by that giant.
