Kingdom of Vitho

Vitho was actually the largest of the native Baltazim settlements when the empire first took an interest in Dalanya. By the early 5th century Azeryani traders had established regular trade with the Baltazim and Agrazhim at Vitho, further encouraging its growth. When the empire moved to annex Dalanya, Vitho was the site of the first invasion and military base. Its importance as a military base and trade center have remained.

As with Menema, the plague of 460 and the later Azeryani immigration from Zonara/Trierzon led to the immediate area being almost entirely Azeryani in flavor. The local Baltazim and much of the mountain Agrazhim were displaced, at least culturally, and replaced by Azeryani. Unlike in Menema a substantial number of ethnic Baltazim physically survived but took on Azeryani language and culture. Baltazim names figure prominently in Vithan censuses, though Baltazim culture is all but vanished in the area. While there are few obvioussurvivals of Agrazhim culture, the kingdom of Vitho is well-known for its export of fine craft work. The entire region around Vitho shares a strong local accent in its Low Azeryani, which is probably the most telling legacy of its Baltazim and Agrazhim history.

Vitho is a substantial city for such a small region, with a population of nearly 15,000. The Vithan countryside is however ample to support the population and in addition Vitho has a strong mercantile tradition. Vithan merchants trade from Korlua, Trierzon, all the way to eastern Karejia. In addition to Agrazhim crafts, Vitho exports citrus fruits grown locally, and marble and coal mined in the mountains.

Vitho's political climate and structure is indistinguishable from that of any Azeryani city and Azeryani civic customs and traditions are strong. Vitho prides itself on being an Azeryani city, despite its political independence from the empire.

Ziryabism has a few followers in Vitho, but not many. Vithan Ziryabites are tolerated, though the ruling Azeryani hold them suspect. Small scale conflicts between Agrikan bands and Ziryabite warriors are not uncommon, but so far there have been no larger problems.
