At the bequest of the PCs, the 20 days following the return of the
legionnaires from what will later be called "the Great Gargun
Hunt of '18", are relatively peaceful. The legionnaires of
Fobin return to regular duties, collect back pay and even get a day
off.
Days are counted in fours. Each of the three days has specific
duties to be performed during specific watches. Free time may be
spent within the fortress or in the town of Fobin. Permission to
leave the fort is granted on an individual basis. So long as the
legionnaire has no demerits currently unpaid, he or she is granted
permission to leave. All legionnaires must be back by 20:00
(6th Watch), however, unless on patrol or given special
dispensation. No leave of greater than 1 day will be granted during
this period.

The duties are as follows:
-
Wall Duty : Standing on guard. This could be at the Wall
(85%), the Doors (10%) or patrolling the town (15%).
Legionnaires should be in full armour and weapons, kit is
carried with one days rations only when on patrol in the town.
-
Repair Duty: Dressed in light clothes, the legionnaires
head out to work on the paving of the road (40%) north (50%) or
south (50%) of the town, fixing one of the many bridges in the
region (10%) or working on the keep or one of the villas (10%),
or helping harvest the crops (40%) in a nearby field.
-
Break: This watch is free for the legionnaire to use as
he/she wills. Aside from keeping their barracks, arms and armour
clean, there are non-fighting skills to practice, and other
lesser (religious) duties to perform. Any time left afterwards
is up to the legionnaire to fill. Games are regularly held in
the court yard. It is dangerous to not look busy as officers
often have many chores that need doing.
-
Practice: Weapons practice with sword (75%),
pike/spear/javelin (15%) or other weapons (10%)

The Crier's News:
This year there is a position open in the senate. Currently held by
the Nordaka clan, insiders have said it is likely the clan will
loose their seat. Turin Markas, of Shiran, has already spent over
10, 000 denari on his parties. Rumor has it that he began
campaigning early, the day that the senate closed at the end of
winter in fact. Other clans (the Wytels, the Baral, the Gyben and
the Exenion) have all laid claims to the seat. Voting will begin
when the senate renews its session in the winter. Of all the other
candidates only Mitchell Wytel seems the most likely. Hailing from
Coranan, he too has begun campaigning - but he is quieter in his
methods than the Markas clan.
When the senate renews, the question of taxation will be put forth
on the roster; as many landholders feel they are already being
overtaxed. In comparison, the legion claims it needs more money for
the upkeep and repair of its fortifications. The legion proposes
starting the building of 18 more outposts next year, and requires
senatorial approval before they can begin.
The metalcrafter's guild has a petition already formed for the
senate. It requests that the senate specify, in an order to the
legion, that all armour work be done by metalcrafters bonded to the
legion. Their attempt to remove business from weaponcrafters has
yet to be noticed by the other guild, but many believe that, once
discovered - a guild war may erupt between the two guilds in
Tharda. Just in case, the legion is recommending all members with
metalcrafting or weaponcrafting skills keep quiet.
The legion is not currently happy with the temporary hold placed by
the Senate (last session) on the land grants given to legionnaires
retiring with 20 years of service. The Senate appointed Markus
Hediro to look into the amount of land required to continue such a
tradition. He is to give his report after the election of a new
senator in the winter session.
Marshal-Magistrate Kronos, in his second year under that title, is
in Eidel province. He is in charge of the ongoing treason trials of
the remaining Kandian nobles. Rumor has it that there is an
underground operation ongoing by Kandian rebels attempting to sneak
whole families out of Eidel prisons and whisk them safely away to
Kanday. But no truth of such operations has been found. A few
nobles have gone missing only to be declared dead by the treason
tribunal.
Four years ago (714TR) The Thardic Republic ended a war by
political negotiation with Kanday. Triberties Linari Primus Kronos
is seen as having won the war single handedly. Many in the legion
grumble that Kanday would no longer be such a problem if the Senate
had not ended the war so quickly. Kronos (now both Marshal and
Magistrate of Ramala Province) has become very popular. He
regularly supports veteran land grants, and legion-bills in the
senate. His political support and abilities only match his military
prowess.
Marshal-Magistrate Kronos has several well-placed clients, and a
few better placed enemies. The Senate would rather not post the
General anywhere, but they have to do something with him. The
Nordakas want a road built and a new town established. The legion
would, naturally, be required for the worker's safety (and to
help as an additional work force.) A few of the Senators have
suggested that he be put on that project.
A few have recommended giving him what he wants (Ramala) and if he
can indeed tame the savage place - then perhaps he deserves to be
the people's darling. If he fails there however, he will have
no escape or excuse. His patrons will desert and once alone - he
can be destroyed.
Of course if there will be a campaign against Rethem (or Themeson
keep) and Kronas (Tharda) wins the situation he will be ever more
powerful. The Senate probably won't get unanimous enough to
start any hostilities against Rethem at least. So some senators
think Kronas will solve the situation and his enemies think that he
will do something foolish in this delicate situation and spoil his
fortunes.
Currently Marshal-magistrate Kronos is in the process of cleaning
out all the remaining Kandian nobles still in Eidel province. Being
in charge of the ongoing treason trials has given him a great deal
of money and lands. And with this he has begun buying clients.
Unfortunately he is not buying friends in the senate.
The legion has begun to increase its patrols along the Rethem
border in a seemingly futile attempt to stem the flow of bandits
and raiders. The Legatus Jithis Mariam of the Gerium Legion has
petitioned the Senate for more men and more outposts along the
Rethem border. The Legatus has gone as far to say that official
sanction should be made and extra taxes levied on Rethem's
merchants since it is their country that is causing the problem.
Items before the Senate in the Year 718TR:
-
Voting on whom should hold the senate seat of Pelor Nordaka
(seat #68). Pelor died of natural causes in 717, just after the
senate closed in Morgat.
-
A petition by the metalsmiths guild to subdivide their trade
into three guilds: precious metals (gold and silver smiths) and
armor makers and metal workers/ferriers. Their argument being
that if the weapon crafters can have their own guild, then the
remaining guild should be further subdivided by specialty.
-
What to do with Marshal – Magistrate Kronos. His four-year
term is up. The senate must either renew his existing position,
or find someplace else to put him.
-
What to do with Jithias Mariam. His four-year term is up and
there are still large amounts of banditry plaguing the
Thardic-Rethem border. Many believe these bandit attacks are the
first wave of an invasion force – testing the Thardic
defenses.
-
Funding for forts along the River Thard. Fobin, while it has
been repaired in the past, requires more money for expansion.
Caer Coranan and Shiranan also require funding for more
permanent reparations. Since the repairs at Fobin were a
success, those plans will be used to repair similar damage along
the River Thard.
-
Cestor Keep – should it be built? The Jeredostas insist
that Hediro, while a nice keep, is not really a viable legion
fort. Instead, the fort should be moved to Cestor – a
location more prominently placed and thus a better place from
which to protect the surrounding area. The fact that Cestor, if
made a port town, would greatly lessen the burden required to
shift stone from the two nearby Jeredosta quarries, makes it
even more tempting.
-
Themeson keep – Four years ago it split off from its
Rethem Agrikan parent order, and became disputed territory. The
decision to leave manors held by knights of the Cohorts of
Gashang alone (untaxed, unpatrolled) has been unpopular with
everyone but the Cohorts of Gashang. Merle of Kantar (leader of
the Order of Eight Demons) is to speak before the senate and
offer her proposal to this uncomfortable situation.
-
The senate wants the entire Salt Route paved as soon as
possible. Thus Magistrate-Marshal Kronos will get his
appointment to Ramala in 722TR. Currently they’re letting
Parga Ostardes (current Legatus there) handle the situation; but
Parga does not have the skill to remedy the problem.
Rumors
-
Obviously Clan Nordaka is torn. Do they force the
Magistrate-Marshal into taking Ramala (by making him choose
amongst his titles) or do they just leave him to rot in Eidel
province? Either could provide equal profit. They want a port
town built in an attempt to divert trade from crossing Kaldor.
-
There's serious trouble brewing along the Tharda and Rethem
border. Everyone can hear scabbards clattering as the two
countries brace for war.
-
The tribesmen of Ramala are a constant problem. Not just to the
legion and Tharda but to the Peonian church as well. Seems four
messengers have been lost to tribal incursions this year alone.
The Western Worship of Peoni in Hârn wants to separate
from the Eastern church. There is some rumor that the messengers
were received in Tashal, but that the Peonian Cardinal refuses
to acknowledge Sister Anna of Coranan's letters or concerns.
Sister Anna has sent a copy of her letter by sea to the Pontif
on Lythia.
-
There's a Gargun army attacking North-Western Tharda. Yet
another problem to deplete the legion's forces.
-
The legion has a troop of Centaurin archers - formed this year
from a colony of Centaurin discovered in Kom province.
-
The favorite stories in the Republic this year were those of
Marshal-Magistrate Kronos and his successful tactics against the
Kandian forces four years ago. Few storytellers are not willing
to tell tales of the White Rose and his activities for fear of
displeasing the mob.
The Farmers
They arrive late from the northern settlements within Fobin's
perview. They have baskets of early spring vegetables, dried apples
and a few pounds of wild caught meat and their furs. They intend to
sell it all to the legion. Bartering is done by the head cook. The
farmers will then offer their services to the local villas in hopes
of earning extra cash by helping harest the wheat and the rye. The
hot, dry weather of the day makes the harvest go well -- dispite
the weatherlore of the village elders, they say tomorrow will be
foggy (possibly light rain) and thus the harvest must be as much
completed as possible. The fields north and west of the town are
alive with workers. Tarps are strung over and under the crops when
they can no longer be stuffed into the barns and other structures.
Legionnaires go out to build a temporary shelter (using tarps, some
lumber and a bit of stone) near the mill.

A Small Group of Human Adventurers
The 3 adventurers are seeking information pertaining to the
riddlemasters. They have heard there may be a mistic (or priest of
Save-Knor) in the area who may help them. They want to press on to
Geishtei but their supplies are low. They are inquiring at the
fortress to see if anyone within can help them. None can. They are
jovial, but shabbily dressed with long and unkept hair. While they
don't smell…too bad, they are obviously foreigners.
Someone takes pitty on them and offers them a bath and a shave for
a d apeace. At first the adventurers are against the idea, but they
soon change their mind when the benefits in regards to dealing with
Thardians are explained. They are not willing to tell much of what
they already know about the riddlemasters; saying the information
was hard won and they do not wish to devaluate what they do have to
trade with those who may very well have the answers.
Huntsmen Arrive with Food for the Lauder
The huntsmen have had lots of luck north, towards Imrum. It seems
something has been scaring all the big game down out of KOM
province. They arrive with five deer and a brace of rabitts for the
lauder. The head cook of Fobin gives them a fair price for their
wares and invites them to spend the night. They accept and spend
the rest of the watch in the baths. There are four huntsmen, all
four are dressed in rough leathers, and are armed with longbows and
short swords.

A group of displaced farmers arrive seeking work.
The group is directed to a nearby villa. They came from the north,
claiming they fled the town of Then some 20 days ago and have been
dispossed every since. They are willing to settle their families in
the region but are unwilling to resettle in the town of Then. A few
officers go out to talk to the farmers to try and learn more
information. They were chased out of their village by day-walking
gargun. It seems they are settled just north of Fobin in the woods.
Their families are eager to resettle. Where may be a problem.

A Nohla is spotted in the day travelling north of Fobin
The dispossed farmers have been convinced to settle in the Fobin
area. As they were departing, the legionnaires that went north to
help reported that they saw a Nohla sulking in the woods. The
tenaci decided to flee the area..um…regroup and wait for
support.

A manus is sent north to examine the area and return with
information. It takes them only 2 hours to find the nolah's
tracks and return. The patrols are doubled throughout the night,
but the Nohla is not found.
