The Fuming Gate
A Clerical Order of the Hierarchy of Eternal Flame
Adherents
General Info
Locals in Hyen attend weekly services. The Terhani and the clergy perform services twice daily in both temples, in addition to the monthly lay mass. The Tormau and Golotha temples only sponsor lay masses and private ceremonies.
The majority of lay adherents are mercenaries, and soldiers. The Order of the Fuming Gate tends to attract warriors of all kind. Their faith has a special place for metal crafters and armorers as well as physicians and butchers. The younger sons of noble families seem to be particularly attracted to its warlike ways.
Morality of Adherents
The meaning of the morality attributes (see Hârnmaster rules) of members of the Order of the Fuming Gate may be interpreted as follows:
Diabolical (3-4)-- Adherent obeys the commandments of the church, but only while being watched. Commandments and regulations are designed as an ideal and it is expected that they will be broken often. Whether the Reasonless Reaper expects these adherents to meet their goals-methods are unimportant. There is no such thing as moral depravity, and anything that improves one's personal lot in life is worth doing.
Unscrupulous (5-7)- Guilt is for the weak. The end always justifies the means. Commandments are designed to show an ideal, and like battle plans, rarely survive an encounter with the enemy. There is no right or wrong, only a many shades of gray. One survives by wit and skill. Error in life, as in combat, should be fatal.
Corruptible (8-10) - The Commandments of the Church are absolute and perfect, but we humans are fallible. The church is strict and unbending in its ways, but like the willow, its followers bend easily to whim and will of the stronger. So long as our goals are lofty, and are means are just, there is no sin or guilt. If this were not so, why then, did the gods create penance?
Law Abiding (11-13)- The rules of the church are absolute, and so must our lives be. Sin is punishable by the right of combat. We are the physical embodiment of the law of the church. We can not fail, nor disobey. For the law is inviolate. Should we break it without sanction, the penalty is death by combat. Just as it should be. The ends always justify the means only if the means are heaven sent.
