There are a lot of misplaced words in mideavil role playing.
A great resource for words is the Dictonary for Old English; unfortunately it's incomplete and costs about 9$US a letter. The group writing it is only up to the letter E (having done D in 1986, C in 1988, B in 1991, AE in 1992, A in 1994 and E in 1996). For those wishing a more robust (and cheeper) resource, try some of the following:
- The Englisc List A Forum for Composition in Old English. It's a great site for seeing just how the language has changed. Take a close look at the "Instant Old English" page for a general feel.
- The Old English Pages An encyclopedic compendium of resources for the study of Old English and Anglo-Saxon England. This page has an excellent article on verb usage (Verb Movement in Old and Middle English: Dialect Variation and Language Contact) that should help those willing to learn Old English.
- The WWW Guide to Old English A general reference page with links to fonts and other interesting sites. (My favorite being English through the Middle Ages)
The English language is dynamic - growing and changing yearly. While few would want to play or run a game spoken entirely in old english; changing the way you speak the language does provide a feeling. Certain words and concepts predate the 13th century in which Hârn is set. The concepts part of the previous statement is a topic for another editorial. As to the words...
Words that should be avoided:
- Automatic - a word associated with the industrial revolution; involving
little or no human manipulation. When using the word to describe speed or
performance without thought - try reflexive.
