Some Harnic Herbs

The following is a list of added herbs that may be found on Hârn.

Halbise (Herbal healing draught)

A small white flower that grows close to the ground on a bed of small, deep green leaves. It is found in mountains between the 4000 and 6000 feet elevations. It blooms during the spring and early summer. [Uncommon]

Prepation & Dosage

Pick leaves (5 - 8 oz per plant) in late summer, crush 1 lb and mix with 6 quarts water and 2 quarts brandy. Let ferment for 60 days. Strain and distill. Yields 1 quart of reddish brown liquid. DOSAGE: 1 oz taken orally. Normally sold in flask containing 4 doses.

Effects

Increases the following day's healing rolls by 10%. Will cause the subject of feel light-headed for 1-2 hours after taking.


Shorinda (Poison, also called Blade Venom)

A lichen found in Needleleaf forests on trees (and occasionally on stone). It is a greenish brown, with a grayish tinge to it around the edges. [Rare]

Preparation & Dosage

Gather 1 pound (fresh), mix with 1 quart urine, and let ferment for 6 days, then distill. Yields 2 oz of a dark, thick liquid. Coat sharp implements (see NOTES). DOSAGE: introduce to blood stream.

Effects

Takes effect within 1 to 2 minutes (1d6 + 6 combat rounds) of wounding. Subject must make a End x 3 check. CS; no effect, MS; +1 injury point to that wound, MF; +1d4 injury points to wound, CF; +1d8 injury points and wound is infected.

Antidote

Treat wound with Berilik or drink Rytrian before poison takes effect. After poison is in effect, Yulpris with flush a Shorinda from system.

Note

One 2 oz dose will cover 5 arrows, or 2 dagger/spear points, or 1 sword/axe blade. It takes a combat round to coat an arrow, 2 combat rounds coat a dagger/spear, and 4 combat rounds to coat a sword/axe. This time may be cut in half with a Dex x 3. A failure means that the user has cut himself and must save vs. the poison.

This poison is a highly volatile liquid and will have lose it's potency after 15 minutes of being applied. In combat, a weapon will remain coated for 6 strikes against armor, or for 2 penetrations.

The Gargun tribes of Hârn have found a way to cultivate Shorinda. For gargun areas the lichen is only uncommon, not rare. The poison is proscribed in Kaldor, Chybisa, Melderyn and Kanday. Use of Shorinda is forbidden to followers of Larani. Follower of Naveh have been known to use Shorinda.


Tarvyn (Love Potion)

A short, scrubby plant 8-10 inches high with red streaked green leaves. Found on mountain cliff sides (in rocky soil). [Very Rare]

Preparation & Dosage

Pick in late autumn. Each plant yields 3-5 oz of main root. Crush 8 oz of main root, and mix with 2 quarts of water, 1 dose of Elprequir, and 1 dose of Alanal, then distill. Yields 2 oz of a brown liquid with a strong, smoky odor. DOSAGE: 0.5 oz mixed in brandy or some other strong smelling drink, take orally.

Effects

Will cause the drinker to faint for 5-10 minutes (will have a strong pulse). On awakening, the drinker will be infatuated with the first member of the opposite he/she sees. The drinker will be more susceptible to doing what his/her lover asks (Will x 2 to resist). Effect will last for 3 to 6 days.


Rytyrian (Poison Antidote/Mild Laxative)

This plant produces 3-6 hollow shoots 6-18 inches high, with a dark colored seed pod at the end of each shoot. Pods weigh about 0.4 to 1.5 oz. Found in marshland, in very wet soil. [Uncommon]

Preparation & Dosage

Pick pods in late summer and let them dry out (about 1 month). When needed, crush 1 pound of pods to a fine consistency. Mix with 1 pound of lentils in 2 gallons of water, boil down to a paste. Yields 1.5 pounds of paste. DOSAGE: 2 oz taken orally.

Effects

Poison Antidote: will neutralize Shorinda and most snake or spider venoms (01-85%). Will have no effect on other poisons. Must be taken 10 minutes before user is poisoned to be effective. This effect will last for 2-4 hours.

Laxative: Will ease digestive system and relieve constipation within 6 hours.

Note

The Rytrian plant looks remarkably like a small Gaethipa plant to the uninitiated. The insect lures of the Gaethipa plant look slightly like Rytrian seed pods a few days after picking. It is normal for apothecaries to search for their own sources Rytrian for fear of buying the poisonous Gaethipa.

Regular use (for longer than one Tendays out of three) will lower End by 1 point temporarily. After 3 weeks without use of the drug will allow End to return to normal.


Chirtyn (Dental Rinse)

A small plant of tiny greenish-brown leaves that has small yellow flowers that bloom for only a couple of weeks in early spring. Found in heath. [Uncommon]

Preparation & Dosage

It takes 5-8 plants (about 3 lbs) to achieve effect. Strip leaves from plants and boil in 2 gallons of water for 6 hours, adding water as needed. Place in oak cask. Keep in dark, cool place for 1 month, then strain and bottle. Yields 1.5 gallons of a light brownish liquid that is very mildly alcoholic. DOSAGE: rinse with 1 oz and spit.

Effects

Will sweeten breath for an hour or two. If used daily over a extended period of time (years), it is thought to aid the fight of teeth loss.

Note

The nobility and wealthier guildsmen are beginning to use this liquid, but even then use is not fully accepted.


Mirgystal (Mild Pain Reliever)

A benign parasitic growth found on a number trees of the Linden family (mixed woodlands and mixed forests). It grows in small patches (6-8 inches) on limbs near the trunk. It is easily identified by the red nodes on the leaf stems. 6d6 nodes per patch. [Uncommon]

Preparation & Dosage

Remove patch and let dry by hanging (1-2 weeks). Crush 1 node and it's leaf, boil in 1 pint of water. DOSAGE: take tea orally.

Effects

Will relieve minor aches and pains for 1/3 of Endurance in hours. Extended daily use will less the time.


Wyntalick (Endurance Potion)

4-5 inch high. Produces small, sour blue berries in summer (4d6 berries). Grows in patches of 4-7 plants. Found in and around salt swamps and near salt fens. [Rare]

Preparation & Dosage

Mash 1 pound of berries and mix with 1 quart of water, ferment for 3 months and distill. Yields 1 oz of purplish liquid for each pound of berries. DOSAGE: 0.5 oz taken orally.

Effects

After 3d6 minutes, increases Endurance by 50% for 1-3 hours. Afterwards the user will be exhausted and hungry. Each additional dose will postpone after-effects at a temporary loss of 1 point of Endurance per dose for 1d4 hours (cumulative).


Ithola (Burn Ointment)

10-15 inches high. Produces 2-4 (1d3+1) stems, each ending in one broad leaf. Grows in patches of 13-20 (1d8+12) plants. Found in or near bodies of slow moving fresh water (lakes, ponds, some moats, etc...). [Common]

Preparation & Dosage

May be picked during Spring or Summer. Crush leaves to produce a thick paste. Boil root and stems to produce an oily, brown liquid. Mix with paste and seal. Allow 2 weeks to rest. Yields 1-3 oz. of ointment per plant. Ointment will remain effective for about 1 year. Must be produced from freshly picked plants. DOSAGE: Spread lightly over the burned area (1oz./5 IPs).

Effects May only be used on burns of 10- IPs. Will aid the healing of a burn wound by +25%. May be used for the first 4 days of healing.
