Born in 694, Kerbin was left with a man who knew his mother briefly.Hethor acknowledged Kerbin as a bastard by Meilla of Gelashdrin, a Legionnaire from Coranan province. Hethor did not know who Kerbin was fathered by, and really did not care. Hethor married soon after Kerbin's arrival to Sura, a local girl of only slightly better status than his on. Hethor and Sura were farmers, and worked a small patch of their own land as well as a larger patch of their lord's. Kerbin decided that, by age 7 he hated this life; so he ran away. He was intent on going to a mining town - to work there for a year and gain his freedom, but he got lost.
On a cold and rainy night, a group of legionnaires found him, and brought him to their campsite. Sitting there by the warm fire he listened to their stories, and ate their food. The next day one of the travelers with the legionnaires introduced himself as "Hammil"; a traveling minstrel and wanderer. Hammil was far more than that - but it took Kerbin a few years to realize what his new master was, exactly. Kerbin and Hammil traveled for several years together before finally settling down in Shiran city. Hammil had taught him the basics of magic during their travels, and now in town Kerbin had a chance to study in earnest. But he quickly became embroiled in the politics of his craft's guild (The Guild of the Arcane Lore.) To gain money, and find allies, he began working in the woods outside the city with a man who's reputation was as bad as Hammil's. Both Hammil and Kerbin had questioned the guild, and its politics openly, and for that they were hated.
To protect Kerbin from the guild's vengeance, Hammil made sure Kerbin got into the Legion at age 16. He served in Coranan for his mandatory 5 years. Upon returning to the city after he was mustered out, he found a quiet spot in Omagil in which to open up his inn. The idea for the "Haven" had come to him during the many long treks he'd performed as a legionnaire. Travelling from place to place, he saw many inns - and noticed how happy most innkeepers looked. So he opened an inn and bought his way into the innkeeper's guild in Coranan.
Kerbin regularly hums and sings to himself. He's not that great a singer (ML 36, Voice 12) but what he lacks in skill he more than makes up for enthusiasm.
Kerbin is a Fyvrian (Earth-magic) mage. He practices very little, and thus is not really that good. His base for any Fyvrian spell is 18. He is more interested in cooking than actually practicing/doing magic; but he has acquired a few books, notes and scrolls on the topic. They are all hidden away in his secret laboratory.
Kerbin owns the various armor and equipment from his legionnaire days. He has a quilt gamberson and worsted-lined cloak, knee high kurbol boots and a metal skull-cap. But usually he wears a long tunic, tied at the waist by a thick leather belt. His sandled feet can be heard shuffling about the kitchen from dawn to dusk. He wears a dagger on his right hip. Weapons, and armour, are kept in his room upstairs in a locked chest. He appears fit for his large size, and regularly practices maneuvers 1 day out of 10 with the Omagil militia. He always has a friendly smile for new patrons, and a welcoming grin for the old.
