Low Azeryani vs. High Azeryani:
The Azeryani Empire is unique in that it has two 'official' languages, Low and High Azeryani. The two are very closely related to each other and comprehension between the two is 50%. However, High Azeryani grammar is very complex and subtle and typically most Low Azeryani speakers find it difficult. While they are capable of communicating in High Azeryani, they are usually not capable of communicating correctly in a formal sense.
Low Azeryani is the common tongue, spoken by and native to almost all members
of the core areas of the empire. High Azeryani is an older form of the language,
preserved by the Nobles and Equites and its spoken use is confined to these
classes. However, it is the language used for all government documents, and
it is the language of scholarship. Because of its origins and usage there is
a strong 'snob' factor associated with High Azeryani. One's grasp of the intricacies
of the grammar are regularly used as an indicator of social status.
