Rutera is the oldest daughter of Sisilius and Methiara. Sisilius was the first son of Orvius. Rutera was the first of eight children. She was born in Coranan on the coldest day of the winter in the year 657TR. A pretty young thing her father paid scuttage rather than allow her into the legion with her other siblings. She married Jarius at the age of 14 in a social ceremony binding the Weijiks and the Wytels together for the first time.
Jarius moved into the Weijik clan home some two years later. The following spring Rutera bore her first child (Claius M:674TR). The birth went well and Rutera took the time to write her family's history and update their genealogies. Her first publication was well accepted by the population of Coranan; as genealogy is an accepted woman's topic. Her next birth the following year she wrote and published two works of poems and popular family songs. The child (Musica F:675TR) died in birth and left Rutera sick for the following year.
Her second publication became popular and the Shek-P'var temple could not keep copies on their shelves. While the literate culture is small in Coranan, it is voracious. Rutera's hobby became the clan's accepted pass time and even today families who hope to gain acclaim with the Weijiks teach their children writing and hope it will become their hobby.
Rutera became the matron after bearing 8 children, and seeing her husband die in the Salt War. Her children (Braenius M, Shenlaw M, Torbir M, Musicallia F, Via F, Arsilus M, Miliva F, and Cito M) grew up in the Coranan home. Rutera now holds court there. While not a senator, she is none-the-less a powerful woman who's dignitas is greater than most other clan patrons in the city. Her two sons take their political lead from her.
She insists that whenever possible all clan children be born in the special birthing room in the Coranan house. The superstition has one benefit as the city of Coranan has more than sufficient physicians, midwives and Peonain healers to help with the birth. Still many of the pregnant women object, if not to the travel to get to the clan house, then certainly to the two months of living under Ruteras's roof.
Her blond hair has slowly turned snowy white, but her blue eyes are as sharp as ever. While her health is slowly failing, she is still in robust health for her age. After Jarius died, many suggested she find another husband. To this day she has numerous suitors, but she is no longer interested - saying age has stolen any desire to try and replace Jarius.
Rutera is a wise woman who speaks only after much thought. Her opinions are difficult to change but she never minds listening to an opposing point of view. Many believe it is from her and not the writings of Orvius that her sons retrieved their famous skills for rhetoric and oratory.
The wives of her sons treat her with great respect but chafe when forced to deal with her for too long. Surprisingly she understands this, and treats her daughters-in-law with a gentleness she otherwise reserves for her grandchildren. Rutera has eight body guards in attendance with her at almost all times. Three of these are women, and all are pledged to give their lives to save hers. She rarely walks anywhere any more, preferring a buggy to horseback.
Her reasons to leave home are now few. Merchants visit her with silks and the finest spun cottons from which she chooses her garments. Everything else is fetched by slave, or family. Still she requires less and less as the years go by. She still writes. Everything from political opinions, to poems and songs in her hand are carefully copied and sold to all those who wish a copy. The Save-K'nor worship has opened its libraries to her, giving her access to the first tier of knowledge, something normally reserved for the junior priests.
Rutera is best described as impatient, willful, eloquent, persuasive and charming. As much as those seem to contradict, Rutera is a master politician, able to turn on or off the charm as needed. She now uses her health and frailty to achieve her desires as well. Knowing that arguments end faster when she begins to appear tired, or achy. A master manipulator it is no wonder that no one in the clan wishes to defy Rutera. Still she is a good negotiator, able to concede defeat with grace as needed.
