Red Shadows of Herpa, Order of
The Red Shadows of Herpa are a fighting order sponsored by the clerical order of Herpa the Mace. The headquarters of the order is Menekai castle, located in northeastern Rethem, near the Thardic border. Most members of the order are stationed in and around Menekai but small chapterhouses and garrisons may be found at Herpa the Mace temples in Golotha, Ithiko, Moleryn, Senun, Shostim, and Techen. A small handful of soldiers from the Red Shadows of Herpa can even be found at the Herpa the Mace Temple in Coranan.

The order's Akarata is Larga of Gydsilen, who is described in Gods of Hârn as "a coarse and brutish thug". He dwells at at Menekai.

Rethem
There has been tension between the Republic and Rethem since 708, when the Red Shadows of Herpa seized Themeson. The situation was further confused by the schism of 714 that resulted in the holders of Themeson splitting from their parent order and founding the Order of the Cohort of Gashang. The order of Eight Demons, the clerical order that sponsors the Cohorts of Gashang is headquartered in Shiran, with other temples in Coranan and Golotha. They also hold several manors near Themseon. Nether order has been enthusiastic in its support of Chafin III of Rethem. Chafin's response to periodic demands for the return of Themseon from the Thardic Senate has been that the events took place during the reign of his predecessor, and that he has no control over the matter. The Senate proper regards these claims as the "veriest nonsense", but has yet to take firm action on the matter. The situation is said to be giving Chafin ulcers. [Tharda 4]
In fact, the demands are made only to conceal secret negotiations between the Senate and the Cohorts of Gashang for the return of the land to the Republic. The fighting order is well aware of its tenuous position with the Rethemi throne, and with its powerful parent order based across the river at Menekai. The Grandmaster of the sponsoring order of the Eight Demons, Merele of Kantar, supports the return of Themeson to the Republic. Her influence, combined with the persuasion of the Senate, will probably ensure this result. Merele is forty-two, an alluring if sinister figure in Shiran society. [Tharda 4]

Ritzen
Location: Imrum District, Gerium Province, Thardic Republic Status: Legion Outpost Population: 96 people
Ritzen is a legion outpost at the edge of the Imrum District, on the Neshell Downs. It is less than ½ a league from the Rethem border. Surrounded by forests, this outpost is just over a league (5 kilometers) from the Imrium road. The small town receives its fresh water from a deep well that touches an underground stream. Ritzen's name originated from the rich merchant who founded a villa in the area in 653TR. The merchant, Ritzen Meldrez brought his family from Imrum and founded a villa amongst the newly cleared trees. A few peddlers traveled up the rough-cut road from Imrum to Ritzen once every month to deliver supplies, and take back freshly cut timber.
